Malakai is a director, artist and philanthropist on a mission to tell world-building and fantastical narratives that disrupt archetypes of the black diaspora. A desert born Afropunk with a deep love of technology and afro-futurism, her short films have premiered at Sundance, PAFF, Black American Film Festival, Phoenix Art Museum, Reel Sisters and Cannes. In 2019 as part of the ATT Hello Lab Directing Fellowship, she directed, Postmarked, which was executive produced by Lena Waithe and Rishi Rajani. Her short film Souls, starring Tabitha Brown, was executive produced by Anna Hashmi & produced by Stephen Love & Marquita Bradley.
She is the founder of Made In Her Image – a 501©3 non-profit movement based on teaching and empowering young girls and non-binary youth of color to create future social equity within film, media and technology. Malakai was scheduled to receive a Community Service Award at SXSW (2020) for the work Made In Her Image is doing in fields of diversity and creating a pipeline of learning and educational empowerment.
Malakai is also a Sundance Horizon Award Winner and received the Contemporary Forum Artist award from the Phoenix Art Museum for her film installation on death and mortality through the eyes of blackness.
