We’re deeply envious that Sayaka Nakane splits her time between her native Tokyo and Hawaii. But she continues to spin our world, creating rare gems that tap into the idiosyncrasies of Japanese culture and self-contained fantasy worlds. From Yakuza revenge capers to our favourite post-punk, hip hop, acid jazz girl group Atarashii Gakko! or her love and fascination of traditional animation techniques, Sayaka never fails to surprise and entertain.
Sayaka is a recipient of multiple awards from LA Independent Film Festival, London International Festival and is a featured artist on NHK Japan Broadcasting Corporation. She is a prime example of a new wave of female directors who are turning the tide for equality in Japan.
